Liz Gregory

The Blackdown Hills are my home and I have been drawing and responding to them for 45 years. Influenced originally by impressionism, I would attempt to capture the light and shapes in front of me, but as time progressed, I have become increasingly interested in what it feels and looks like to walk through the landscape: viewpoints changing constantly, the noises I hear, even the thoughts I have. I enjoy teaching, and through devising ways for my students to get excited by art, have experimented with techniques which have influenced the way I make my own work. For example, simplifying complicated objects to bold shapes, reducing tones to just three and using the element of chance. None of this is new thinking, but it has helped me to keep being interested and surprised by what I produce.
