SAW LANC Project - Woad: A Plant to Dye For

Three events taking place in August 2008 organised by SAW member Carolyn Griffiths .

An exhibition at Frome Library from August 18th to September 5th, depicting woad and the dyeing process, also work in progress as the workshops take place.

Wednesday, August 20th at 7:30pm Frome Library.

A talk: 'Green Plant - Blue Dye' by David J Hill who until he recently retired was Senior Lecturer at Bristol University School of Biological Sciences. “Having learnt quite a lot about woad from my father Dr Robin Hill (Cambridge University), I started carrying out my own research on woad in the mid 1970s when few other people showed much interest in it. In the 1980s and 1990s I developed a research project and team (funded by EEC and MAFF) at Long Ashton Research Station which lasted until the Station closed in 2003. Since the 1970s I have been giving talks, running courses and providing advice on woad and other natural dyes to encourage people to use these wonderful plants to their best advantage.” The Library is in Justice Lane adjacent to the Market Place car park.

Thursday, August 28th or Saturday August 30th from 10:00am till 4:00pm

Two one day workshops ' Shades of Blue' to be held in the gardens of the Blue House in Frome where I am growing a patch of woad, which looks pretty healthy at the moment, but I am still on the look out for blue snails. Members of the Frome Weavers Group are also growing some along with anyone else I was able to persuade, so we should have plenty. Workshops will take place Thursday, August 28th or Saturday August 30th from 10:00am till 4:00pm. Dress for mess and help prepare two woad vats and one indigo vat with Auli Part and Jenny Douglas, dye samples of cotton, silk, wool or paper. Work with SAW artist Mayumi Kaneko on resist techniques or draw with woad pastels and ink. All materials supplied apart from aprons and rubber gloves. Please bring a lunch to share as the ladies living in the Blue House will be joining us. Blue House is in the centre of Frome next to the bridge, 2 minute walk from parking in the Market car park or Marks & Spencer car park

Places are limited so please register early to ensure you can join the fun, meet other artists or be blue! Contact Carolyn to register or for more information on 01373 467 616 or e-mail zen 109766@zen.co.uk I also need to get an idea of how many people would like to come to the talk so that we can allocate enough room and chairs.

PS David Hill has a reputation as an excellent speaker.

Music Alive and Flux present
a course suitable for anyone looking to consult with young people through engagement in creative participatory activities.

There is increasing pressure from national and local government, funders, organisations and young people themselves for organisations involved in youth arts activities to consult effectively. With this in mind, Artsplan has created this course to respond to this growing need and to inspire course participants to undertake meaningful, well structured, planned, engaging and dynamic consultation programmes with young people.

This course has been created as a result of a huge amount of research via ENYAN (English National Youth Arts Network) into effective, creative methods of consulting with young people. The evidence gained shows clearly the benefits of creative consultation as a tool for gaining access to young people’s real thoughts, fears, options, hopes and aspirations. The course has been developed in partnership with a range of organisations across nine English regions who have submitted case studies demonstrating the creative consultation techniques they have used with young people. All participants will receive the ENYAN ‘Youth Arts Consultation Toolkit’ as well as a wealth of additional course materials.

Trainers
Artsplan trainers have a wide range of excellent skills, experience and understanding developed whilst working within the Youth Arts sector. This course is written by Jay Barron, Artsplan Development Manager, in partnership with ENYAN and organisations across nine English regions.

Participants
This course is suitable for anyone who wishes to develop a greater understanding of what is effective consultation. We will discuss the benefits of consulting with young people and the advantages of creative techniques.
Participants will look at creativity models of good practice and case studies, undertake creative exercises that can be used and adapted in their work with young people. You will gain a further understanding of what is needed to resource consultation and look at effective ways consolidating and utilising your findings.

This course aims to:

  • Raise awareness of how the arts can be used as a tool to consult with young people
  • Showcase practical examples and case studies from the sector to encourage shared learning
  • Encourage creative approaches and an understanding of engaging well with your target audience
  • Clarify what is expected of a maturing youth arts sector and those responsible for consultation activities
  • Highlight issues such as time, resources and the cost of consulting
  • Explore young people’s views on youth arts consultation

Provide signposting and plentiful resources to support the continuation and development of creative consultation techniques

On successful completion of this course participants should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the importance of effective consultation techniques and:

  • Establish good practice approaches and a flexible and responsive style of interaction
  • Feel more confident of undertaking new participatory activities with young people
  • Look reflectively at findings and utilise them for future planning and development
