Artists and Makers
I live on the east side of the Blackdown Hills. I exhibit with the Neroche Artists and have ‘open studio’ for Somerset Art Weeks. I have had solo exhibitions locally and in Birmingham. Mainly self-taught, I painted sporadically during my RAF career, and now regularly. I prefer landscape, working in acrylic, but also in oils and watercolours, drawing inspiration from the Blackdown Hills and from journeys to France, Wales, Mongolia and, most recently, Brazil. I teach painting to a small group of artists at Buckland St Mary. Other work can be seen on www.somersetartweek.org.uk and www.afas.org.uk
Having worked as a garden designer, I began painting initially as a way of letting go the constraints of drawing very precise to-scale garden plans. My drawings and paintings reflect my deep affection and affinity with the landscape around me in Somerset and Devon, and the Blackdown Hills in particular, where I live.
I trained at Borough Polytechnic tutored by David Bomberg. Then at Bath Academy of Art, Corsham with painting and drawing tutors William Scott and Kenneth Armitage (1946 – 49) I taught in Hertfordshire for many years before moving to Somerset in 1975. Have had one-man shows in Cumbria, Cambridge, Cirencester, Frome, Bridgwater, Taunton and Dartington (boring full list available if wanted!) Have also had work shown at Bristol R.W.A., St Ives galleries, Penzance and Bovey Tracey. Exhibit regularly with Artists 303 and Somerset Society of Artists. Work sold to owners in various parts of the UK also Germany and Canada. For more information please ring 01460 234236

I am an abstract/organic painter who works mainly in oils on canvas.I trained at Wimbledon school of art in the nineties. Recently, I have been experimenting in collaboration with nature, physically putting my canvases directly into the environment, a wild flooded are by the river Yarty where I live. Over a period of time allowing the elements, flora and fauna to work on the canvases before returning them to the studio to produce finished pieces. email: bronwengundry@yahoo.co.uk
I am a painter who lives and works in the Blackdown Hills. I am happiest working outside in the landscape because I never quite know what’s going to happen. There is an immediacy and excitement about this approach which is compelling. Conditions change constantly and I have to work quickly. The results are loose and spontaneous interpretations of a subject rather than a copy. Tel: 01823 680351
Having studied and obtained a degree in Fine Art through Plymouth University I have since completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and whilst continuing with my own Fine Art practice, I am also a part-time Lecturer at SCAT (Somerset College of Arts and Technology) on both the Degree and National Diploma programmes. My love of drawing has continued since childhood and is the starting point for all my work, however, this has progressed to encompass an interest in the psychological and in particular the human condition. I continue to experiment with various medium and particularly enjoy utilising digital technology. More recently my completed pieces have included sculpture, textiles and video installation. Artist statement
Conceptually colour is very important to my work. Sometimes it is used to represent what is actually seen but, more often; it is there to express the emotional content of the place or experience. Subject-wise the paintings become about side views, glimpses of colour on motorways, naturally framed journeys down lanes enveloped in trees, places that leave a memory - the view out from a dark car park onto a hillside blazing with light, when you are waiting for your family to return.

I create unique hand woven textiles, often using hand dyed or locally produced yarn. I like exploring the interaction of texture, colour and pattern in the creation of woven fabrics and often manipulate the structure to create an almost 3D effect. I graduated from the Surrey Institute of Art and Design in 1997 and since then have demonstrated and taught the craft of weaving. I have also enjoyed art residencies, producing hand woven design collections and commissions from people who want something precious created just for them.
