I live on the east side of the Blackdown Hills. I exhibit with the Neroche Artists and have ‘open studio’ for Somerset Art Weeks. I have had solo exhibitions locally and in Birmingham.

Mainly self-taught, I painted sporadically during my RAF career, and now regularly. I prefer landscape, working in acrylic, but also in oils and watercolours, drawing inspiration from the Blackdown Hills and from journeys to France, Wales, Mongolia and, most recently, Brazil. I teach painting to a small group of artists at Buckland St Mary.

Other work can be seen on www.somersetartweek.org.uk and www.afas.org.uk

Having worked as a garden designer, I began painting initially as a way of letting go the constraints of drawing very precise to-scale garden plans. My drawings and paintings reflect my deep affection and affinity with the landscape around me in Somerset and Devon, and the Blackdown Hills in particular, where I live.

Gordon Field
All my work now follows two distinct routes…..

gordon field artwork

Journeys through real Landscapes….. revealing the hidden qualities of the world that surrounds us.  Recent Journeys through the Blackdown Hills, The Quantocks and Exmoor have provided the material for my own work as well as the foundations for my journeys where I reveal the landscape to others.

gordon field artwork

Journeys through my Mindscape….. exploring the hidden world of my sub-conscience and imagination.  Recent Journeys have explored automatic as a source of ideas along with automatic sculpture where random objects take on a new life.

I am a painter who lives and works in the Blackdown Hills. I am happiest working outside in the landscape because I never quite know what’s going to happen. There is an immediacy and excitement about this approach which is compelling. Conditions change constantly and I have to work quickly. The results are loose and spontaneous interpretations of a subject rather than a copy.

Having studied and obtained a degree in Fine Art through Plymouth University I have since completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and whilst continuing with my own Fine Art practice, I am also a part-time Lecturer at SCAT (Somerset College of Arts and Technology) on both the Degree and National Diploma programmes.

My love of drawing has continued since childhood and is the starting point for all my work, however, this has progressed to encompass an interest in the psychological and in particular the human condition. I continue to experiment with various medium and particularly enjoy utilising digital technology. More recently my completed pieces have included sculpture, textiles and video installation.

My prints start with simple lines and sketches, taken directly from the landscape; the final picture is a distilled image in its simplest and purest form. Many of my prints take inspiration from traditional Japanese images, which I rework from my western perspective.

I use mainly Perspex for plates and the images are then scratched, burnt or etched onto this, using many different tools and etching mediums to produce an innovative printing style.

Artist statement
I have constantly returned to the themes of landscape, colour and light in my work; figures, words and realism have subsided to give way to semi-abstracted images. Most of my current paintings remain a response to places, sights and journeys that because of form, colour or the way they might be naturally framed, become special.

spring1

spring3

Conceptually colour is very important to my work. Sometimes it is used to represent what is actually seen but, more often; it is there to express the emotional content of the place or experience. Subject-wise the paintings become about side views, glimpses of colour on motorways, naturally framed journeys down lanes enveloped in trees, places that leave a memory - the view out from a dark car park onto a hillside blazing with light, when you are waiting for your family to return.

Having studied Painting at Central School of Art in London, I became an apprentice at Alan Caiger-Smith's pottery in Aldermaston in 1982 . I have continued potting ever since, lucky to be able to make a living doing what I love and producing work that I like in the peace and quiet of the beautiful Blackdowns ( via Kent and Milverton).

I paint tiles and throw red earthenware clay, bisc fire and dip in a white tin glaze and paint birds, leaves etc with onglaze oxides.
This is called Majolica and all the ware is intended for use; I also take commissions for celebratory pieces, kitchen tiles, dinner services etc.
Visitors are most welcome but please ring first.

I create unique hand woven textiles, often using hand dyed or locally produced yarn. I like exploring the interaction of texture, colour and pattern in the creation of woven fabrics and often manipulate the structure to create an almost 3D effect.

I graduated from the Surrey Institute of Art and Design in 1997 and since then have demonstrated and taught the craft of weaving. I have also enjoyed art residencies, producing hand woven design collections and commissions from people who want something precious created just for them.
